Golden Arrows coach Clinton Larsen says Bidvest Wits have been unlucky

Golden Arrows coach Clinton Larsen welcomed his side’s first win over the season, but admitted they were lucky against the defending Absa Premiership champions.

Arrows walked away with the full bag of points as they beat Bidvest Wits 3-1 on Wednesday evening, to avenge their MTN8 quarter-final mishap a month ago.

Larsen felt his side were due for a victory, following their recent displays against Ajax Cape Town and Bloemfontein Celtic, and was delighted for his players.

“If anybody has monitored our performances… against Wits, in the cup, I think we gave a better performance but lost on penalties,” Larsen told reporters after the match.

“We went away to Ajax after that, gave a very good performance and came away with a point – we could have won that game.



“Same thing, after that we totally outplayed Celtic, missed a bucket load of chances and ended up drawing that one too.

“So the writing was on the wall, we were due for a win. The way the players have been training and responding to what we’ve been working on has been very good.”

With The Clever Boys having had the worst start to a season since the PSL's inception in 1996 - coming on the back of claiming their maiden league title last season - Larsen believes Gavin Hunt’s men have not been bad but rather unfortunate.

“We also rode our luck, I thought they had a few chances and it could have easily been 3-3. They had an aerial advantage, we struggled to deal with [Amr] Gamal and when [Eleazar] Rodgers came on, but sometimes when you work hard you get the luck,” he added.

“Maybe in this game they weren’t at their best, but watching them in the two games against Cape Town City, I thought they were the better team. They haven’t been playing that poorly, they’ve been very unlucky in front of goal, and we’ve been through those phases where nothing wants to go in.
