Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt admits concern following loss to Golden Arrows but staying positive

The defending Absa Premiership champions are winless in their opening six matches thus far, and suffered their fourth defeat at home to Golden Arrows on Wednesday evening.

However, Hunt downplayed his side’s record as he continues to lament the missed chances and the nature in which they have been conceding goals.

“I’ve had worse starts than this. Of course I’m concerned, we’ve conceded the most amount of goals since I’ve been here – five years now, and that’s a problem,” said Hunt after the match.

“We should [be scoring], we’re missing hundreds of chances. We should have won 5-0 on Sunday [against Cape Town City] and we didn’t score, and whatever [scoreline] today. But you can’t be conceding goals, not the way we’re conceding. Every time there’s an attack, they [opponents] score.

“We haven’t kept any clean sheets, every game we’ve played we’ve [conceded]… Tonight we must have had five, 100 percent chances. I mean, in the first half, it was on the goal line, you've just got to tap it in. In the second half we had three [chances],” he bemoaned.

The reigning Absa Premiership Coach of the Season defended his decision to make six changes to his side, as well as the 3-5-2 formation he set out.

“I thought it [the changes and formation] worked, we did everything in the first half, we should have scored but we didn’t, and they got three chances and scored three goals,” he continued.

"If we’re honest, in the first half they had one chance – goal, and in the second half they had two chances – goals. [Other than that] they never looked like scoring the whole night.

“But we’ve got to defend better, we’re making some big, big mistakes. You’ve got to keep clean sheets, otherwise you can’t do anything without keeping a clean sheet.”

Egyptian striker Amr Gamal covered some hard yards on the night, scoring his first PSL goal in his third appearance, but missed numerous other opportunities.

“Gamal should have had four [goals] tonight, you know that. He worked hard and he was good for us, I thought he was excellent apart from the missed chances,” Hunt concluded.
