Thuli Madonsela raises R660‚000 so far for Fees Must Fall

Outgoing Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has so far raised R660‚000 towards a #FeesMustFall Fund she launched as part of a social investment initiative - with almost half coming from the chairman of AngloGold Ashanti‚ Sipho Pityana.

Another big donor is Liberty Corporate‚ which also pledged R300‚000.

Former Black Management Forum president Nolitha Fakude has donated R40‚000. The pledges were made on Friday night at the BMF's 40th Year Anniversary dinner in Midrand and Madonsela provided the update during an address at the Young Presidents' Organisation (YPO) Pretoria Chapter Breakfast.

Madonsela said she had also contributed R5‚000 she was given at the International Anglicans Ablaze Conference to donate to a charity of her choice.

She lauded the contributors for their decision to concern themselves with problems experienced by many students in tertiary institutions.

The Public Protector is now looking for a non-governmental organisation that has social justice experience to manage the funds that have been raised.

The fund should solve the problems of legitimate university students and prioritize those who are desperate and destitute‚ Madonsela said.
