Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela says Itumeleng Khune is earning his money

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has joked that goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is earning his money with his stellar performances of late.

Khune has been on song since his return from a chest infection, picking up three straight man-of-the-match awards.

Asked whether the dependency on Khune is a worry for the team, Komphela argued that the Bafana Bafana shot-stopper’s displays form part of a bigger picture.

“Let the goalkeeper [Khune] earn his money,” Komphela quipped. “I think he’s doing fairly well, and it’s great to see that.



“For Itu, and any other player, his performances are not only for Chiefs, Chiefs' supporters and our people back at Naturena.

“His performances are an invite to the national coach as well – to do justice when he is called upon, he can say, ‘okay, I’ve been doing well’.

“Without saying anything to the other goalkeepers out there, I think now he has raised his hand big time to say, ‘Stuart [Baxter], I’m still here’.

"And he had just been sick, he’s recovered and it’s good to see that [he’s come back strong].”

The 30-year-old has returned to the national team fold, after missing the back-to-back defeats to Cape Verde, for the clash against Burkina Faso next month.
