Ndlovu Named As SA’s Only Champions League Player

Qarabag striker, Dino Ndlovu, has been registered as the only South African player in this year’s UEFA Champions League after playing a vital role in their qualification.

The 27-year-old scored the goal that secured the club’s aggregate win over Club Brugge in the final round of qualifying, helping the team not only become the first Qarabag side to reach the group stages but the first team from Azerbaijan ever.

Ndlovu has five goals in nine games so far this season having scored on the opening day of their league campaign as well, and will now be hoping to take that form into the clashes with Chelsea, Roma and Atletico Madrid in the coming weeks.

At one point it appeared that the striker would be joined by both Rivaldo Coetzee and Panagiotis Retsos in the UCL in terms of South African participants with Celtic and Olympiacos respectively, however, Coetzee’s move fell through and Retsos joined Bayer Leverkusen.

Ndlovu’s first UCL group stage game will be against Chelsea next week on September 12th.
