"The autopsy revealed that the deceased died of a subdural haemorrhage‚” Mauritius police spokesman Inspector Shiva Coothen told TMG Digital on Friday.
And‚ while police on the island continue their investigation into her death‚ it has emerged that her younger siblings could prove to be crucial witnesses in the state’s case.
The 17-year-old from Springs in Gauteng arrived on the Island earlier this week with her father‚ Mike‚ step-mother Marietjie and her younger brothers for what was supposed to be a “once-in-a-lifetime holiday”.
But the holiday ended tragically after she was allegedly hit by her step-mother after a heated argument over swimming towels and collapsed on Wednesday at the Riu Hotel in Le Morne on Wednesday.
Coothen said that Marietjie was facing a “provisional charge of homicide”.
“She is detained‚ the investigation is in progress and she will be brought back to court in one week‚” he said
She appeared in the Bambous District Court on Thursday and told police that she had slapped the “bad-tempered” teen who was later found collapsed on the floor.
Coothen said it was too early to say when the remaining family members would be allowed to return to South Africa. “This will depend on the inquiry officers …. Of course anybody who has witnessed what happened at the hotel‚ their statement and their testimony is crucial‚” he said
reported that one of Mundolene’s siblings had seen the altercation and could be a key witness when police recreate the crime scene.
A message from the traumatised family‚ shared on Facebook on Thursday‚ explained that a glass had been thrown at Mundolene during the afternoon at the ground-floor swimming pool in front of guests on Wednesday.
A family member implored Marietjie not to cause a scene and threatened to call off the holiday. A few minutes later‚ Mundolene was found collapsed in a corridor at the hotel. She was treated by a doctor and declared dead about 30 minutes later.
Mundolene’s boyfriend in Johannesburg composed a song on the piano in her memory and posted it on Facebook. “So im not a good paino player but i wrote this to my girlfriend from my heart so I’d like to share it. This is to you my angel‚” he said.
Messages of condolences continued to be shared across social media on Friday.
“RIP beautifull child‚ surely gonna be missed‚ but never forgotten.....be free‚ dance with the angels.......Mundolene‚” said Carnelle Vorster.
